Thoughts from our longest-tenured singer
|
I began singing with Choral Arts of Chattanooga around 1990. At the time, I was playing oboe and English horn in the Chattanooga Symphony, but really missed singing. Dr. John Hamm, the CAC founder, let me sing with CAC when the Symphony schedule permitted. I’ve sung every concert since retiring from CSO in 2000.
Some really special memories stand out: Singing with Dave Brubeck was thrilling. That was the most difficult music I’ve ever sung with CAC! At times, sections of the choir were singing in different keys simultaneously. Crazy, but that’s jazz. My most challenging performance was one in Georgia. It was so crowded on the risers that I couldn’t see my own music and had to read over the shoulders of the altos in front of me! |
Once when we were suddenly without a conductor in the middle of a season, I had the pleasure and challenge of planning, rehearsing, and conducting a CAC concert. What a joy!
In any musical group, relationships are the best part. We start as colleagues, progress to friends, and ultimately become a musical family.
Thank you for coming to hear us, and please continue. We all love singing for you!
P.S. Did you know that Darrin Hassevoort, our fabulous Music Director, was once a CAC singer? He’s in the photo and in the list of singers in both of our CDs – Brubeck in Chattanooga and Days of Blue and Gray.
